Jody Hewitt was born in 1958 in Westwood, California. Her interest in art began while she was still a young girl. She attended Horizons School for the Arts and Humanities where she studied drawing, painting and photography. In 1983 she graduated with honors from California State University, Northridge with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Jody still expresses herself with her own version of mixed-media collage but her newest love is encaustic painting on wood panels. In a recent interview Jody stated:
"My current passion is encaustic painting. I first saw encaustic while visiting in the Northwest several years ago. I had never seen anything like it. Now the smell of the molten beeswax and freshly sanded wood are worlds away from the fumes of adhesives, resins and oil paints that used to permeate my studio. Working with the emulsion is fun. From fusing the base to applying endless layers, I am always delighted with the finished piece. The textures and colors are rich and alive. I really cannot think of anything else I’d rather be doing."
