SARAH SPENCER

ABOUT SARAH SPENCER

Growing up, Sarah Spencer moved with her family all over the United States.

Relocating took her from her birthplace of Syracuse, New York to the deep green

woods of Northern Wisconsin, then to the open prairies of
Oklahoma, back to the

antique hills of Upstate New York, and finally to the desert landscapes of Arizona.

She learned early to adapt to change and these abrupt shifts in her young life are

reflected in her art today. Sarah currently lives in a historic neighborhood in

Phoenix, Arizona.

For her undergraduate degree, Sarah attended the Rochester Institute of

Technology and graduated with a BFA in Graphic Design and Art. Upon

graduation, Sarah was hired by a Chicago design firm and worked there until her

move to Phoenix in 1993 where she accepted a job with the award winning

design firm Tieken Design. While employed by Tieken, and then subsequent

firms, Sarah was the resident illustrator and artist. Her work was published for

clients as well as self-promotional pieces for the design firms.

1999 brought about the formation of Sarah’s own design firm, Taylor-

Spencer Creative. With a partner, her firm created branding and marketing

materials for corporations as well as individuals. Sarah successfully ran the

business as co-creative director until she left the agency in 2005 to follow her

bliss.

26 Letters was founded as an outlet for Sarah’s creative thinking. She writes

verses and paints art for a host of products, including greeting cards, note cards,

journals and invitations. The company sells the products to individuals and retail

stores across the United States and abroad. A fine art and licensing division was

added in 2007.

Today, Sarah paints, sculpts, writes and gardens to express her artistic voice.

Her paintings on canvas are the latest installment in her 14 successful years in

the creative field. Her candid, modern images range in size from intimate twelve

inch squares to bold three by four foot paintings.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

“I am influenced deeply by the diverse natural and urban environments in which

I’ve lived. Exploring the remote northern woodlands as a child has instilled a

respect for our natural world, while living in urban environments has fueled my

fascination of human invention. Now, I am blessed by the ubiquitous sunlight of

the Sonoran desert and marvel at the rich texture of shade and shadow it creates.

I am inspired to paint this otherwise overlooked beauty. My work observes nature

in its simplest forms. I often juxtapose these against human-made objects to show

the relationship we have with nature and how it influences us.”
